Dessert Table Portions Calculator

For a dessert table after a full meal, plan 2 to 3 mini desserts per person, or one standard cake slice plus 1 extra mini item.

Calculate a baseline for your guest count, then divide the total among cake, cookies, cupcakes, bars, and specialty desserts.

Kids are counted as about 60% of an adult portion. Appetite and leftover adjustments are shown in the result.

How many desserts per guest

After a full meal, most guests take two or three small items when several choices are displayed. If every item is a standard full serving, plan closer to one to two per person. When cake is ceremonially served to everyone, order one slice per guest and add one mini dessert for variety. For a cocktail reception or dessert-only event, increase the allowance to four to six mini pieces per person.

Variety encourages sampling, so make individual items smaller as the number of choices grows. Divide the total piece count across the menu rather than making every variety for every guest. Keep 30 to 40 percent in familiar favorites such as cookies, brownies, or cupcakes; use the balance for specialty items and dietary options.

Build and refill the dessert display

Count children as roughly one standard serving unless the event format suggests otherwise. Confirm how cake slices will be cut because wedding, party, and bakery serving sizes differ. Label nuts and major allergens, separate gluten-free or vegan items with dedicated utensils, and make enough clearly identified alternatives for the guests who need them.

Display smaller quantities and replenish the table so delicate desserts stay fresh and the arrangement remains full. Keep chilled items cold until needed and avoid direct sun. Add about 10 percent for breakage and unexpected guests, but skip a large buffer when cake and dinner are already generous. Choose items that can be frozen or packed easily if leftovers are likely.
