Camping Food Calculator for Groups

For each camper-day, plan breakfast, lunch, dinner, substantial snacks and at least 2 liters of drinking water, then adjust for activity and conditions.

This camping-specific planner multiplies the group by trip days. It does not use the Party Food appetizer, chips or dip configuration.

Camping meal plan

Plan for 8.0 adult-equivalent camper-days. Quantities include one 10% reserve; package rounding is shown separately so the reserve is not counted twice.

Formula and assumptions

Adult-equivalent camper-days = (adults + children × 0.6) × trip days. The standard plan applies 75 g of dry breakfast base, two lunch portions, 100 g of dry dinner staple, 150 g of protein or plant alternative, 100 g of snacks and 2 L of drinking water per adult-equivalent day. Light and active settings multiply food by 0.9 and 1.2. One 10% reserve is added once.

Adjust the result before shopping

  • Replace category totals with the exact ingredients required by your chosen recipes.
  • Count fuel, potable water for cooking and cleaning, and food-storage equipment separately.
  • Use shelf-stable foods when reliable cold storage is unavailable.
  • Check fire restrictions, wildlife-resistant storage rules and potable-water availability for the specific destination.

Food-safety and water caveats

The USDA camping food-safety guide recommends planning storage and preparation equipment, keeping perishables cold, separating raw foods and using potable or properly treated water. The National Park Service camping checklist uses 2 liters per day as a rule of thumb and stresses that hot conditions can require more.

Frequently asked questions

How much food should I take camping per person?

Start with three meal components and one substantial snack allowance per person per day, then adjust for activity, children, storage and the menu you will actually cook.

How much water should I plan per camper?

This planner starts at 2 liters of drinking water per adult-equivalent day. Heat, altitude, activity, cooking and cleaning can require much more, so follow guidance for the specific park and route.

How are children counted?

Children count as 60% of an adult for food planning. Teenagers and very active children may need a full adult allowance.

Does the calculator include an emergency reserve?

Yes. It adds one 10% food-and-water planning reserve before showing package rounding. Carry any emergency supplies required for your route separately.
